So glad to be back here on Granny’s Vital Vittles! So much has been going on in my life that writing had to go on the back burner for awhile. But now I’m ready to fire that burner up again and start producing some fresh and tasty content for all my wannabe Granny friends 🙂 .
I imagine you might be curious about what’s been happening, and what led to such a long blogger vacation. Well, I’ll tell you.
A Fork in the Road
When I started this blog, and for the 3 years it was very active I was working full time as a contract software developer, with a 10hr+ a week commute on top of it. So I was working, driving, cooking, writing, and promoting my work … in other words I was working ALL the time. I wanted to work full time on Granny’s Vital Vittles, but knew I was a long way from making that happen.
I was a part of a real food blogger network of several hundred food blogs and was seeing some real progress toward being able to make blogging my job when that network blew up with way more drama than any soap opera you might remember. It was very disheartening to see. Most in the group lost a sense of direction as far as making blogging support us goes, myself included, and had to work out new ways to make blogging pay the bills. Many sites started to pitch MLM products, or host tons of ads, or do a lot of click-baitey type articles. I was even more disheartened with blogging than I was before.
So I lost my blogging mojo between the drama and the exhaustion.
And I had a choice to make.
I had started blogging because I wanted to share the huge difference real food everyday can make in the average persons life! And how much cheaper it is than everyone thinks! And easier too!
I didn’t want to write posts to promote overpriced products. I didn’t want there to be so many ads you couldn’t find the post anymore.
I wanted to share my love of real food, but I like everyone else had to make a living. Burned out and exhausted I gradually stopped posting. I left software development when there was a layoff at my company, worked for awhile with a local real estate agent, brought my elderly mother to live with me, and started a local home organization business called appropriately 😉 , Rent-a-Granny so I could be home to take care of her.
That brings me to the choice I’m making now.
I still want to share my love of real food so I’m making plans for Granny’s Vital Vittles that will allow me to continue doing just that!
My Plans for Granny in 2019
I now intend devote my full time efforts to advocating for traditional real food daily cooking. My goal is to support all the wannabe Granny Mom readers with recipes, videos, books, workbooks, etc, to nourish their families and themselves and have some fun doing it to boot!
But to do that I have to figure out some ways to make blogging pay a bit more than it has.
Visiting most blogs you’ll notice that they support themselves either thru tons of ads, making the site hard to read and explore, or they get involved in a project to sell something thru multi-level marketing like essential oils, skin care, supplements, etc. I don’t want to take Granny’s Vital Vittles in that direction … I want to keep it readable, popup free, and without sales pitches that seem to inject themselves into most posts after awhile.
So I’ve setup a Patreon account and have moved the conversation from post comments to Facebook.
I did have comments open originally on the site but it just got to be too much to keep up with what with all the spambots running around … so now all the conversation about posts will be happening on either the Facebook Granny’s Vital Vittles page which is of course open to all, or for more in depth conversation and advice, in Granny’s Ladies Circle, a closed group on Facebook for Patreon Friends of Granny’s Vital Vittles.
I’ve kept the subscription cost really low … it’s a way for me to keep the discussion going, learning what people are working on and helping with some advice, and all the while make a little bit of income from my blogging. Hopefully with a bit of time, I’ll be able to work full time on producing more and more info to help all the Granny folk following the site.
New Style plus More Content
You might have noticed the new look. Granny has gussied up the place a bit, swept out the cobwebs of old & broken pages and links, refreshed a ton of images, and re-added some posts that got lost in the shuffle of different hosting companies over my hiatus period. So if you’ve been looking for an older post you should be able to find it now on the ‘Start Here – Articles‘ page. If not let me know and I’ll see what I can do to bring it back online. I think I’ve found and re-posted about 95% of everything that was originally published back in the day.
Youtube Channel Starting up!
I’m also starting a Youtube channel with the help of my ever so talented son! This is going to really exciting and so much fun for the both of us. We hope to create an ongoing series of recipes and instructional videos this year so stay tuned! He loves to bake and is currently learning to make candy as well … we hope to share some of those projects pretty soon.
Writing is my First Love
As a rather quiet introverted person my first choice to share my thoughts is always to write them down. So I plan to continue sharing my thoughts, recipes and projects here on Granny’s Vital Vittles. But don’t be surprised if you find a few more photos and video clips from my day to day life sprinkled around here and there.
So let’s get started! And here we go!
